AC Repair Vaughan - FAQs
My Vaughan third floor is unbearable in summer but the main floor is fine. Is the AC undersized?
Usually not. This is the most common cooling complaint we get in newer Vaughan subdivisions and it is nearly always distribution. Warm air rises, so the top of a three-storey house gains heat from below as well as from outside. Meanwhile the return air is normally concentrated on the lower floors, so the system has no way to pull the heat back out of the top storey. A bigger air conditioner cools the main floor faster and leaves the third floor exactly as hot.
So what actually fixes it?
Getting more air moved to and returned from the top floor. That can mean adding return air upstairs, rebalancing the dampers, a variable-speed blower that runs longer at lower speed to keep air circulating, or splitting the house into two zones. In some homes a single ductless head in the worst room is the cheapest honest answer. We measure airflow floor by floor first so the recommendation follows the numbers.
Would closing the main-floor vents push more air upstairs?
It is the obvious move and it usually backfires. Closing vents raises static pressure across the whole system, which makes the blower less effective everywhere and can push a furnace or air handler toward overheating and short cycling. Balancing with dampers at the trunk is the controlled version of the same idea and it does not choke the system.
The builder installed everything ten years ago. Is that the problem?
Partly. Builder installs are specified to meet code and cost, not to optimise comfort, and single-zone systems serving three storeys were standard practice across Vaughan through the build-out. It is not a defect, it is a design compromise you inherited, and it is fixable without replacing the equipment.
