Water Heater FAQ
How long does a water heater last?
A traditional tank water heater typically lasts 8 to 12 years. Tankless water heaters last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. If your unit is approaching these ages, proactive replacement avoids an unexpected cold-water emergency.
What is the difference between a tank and tankless water heater?
A tank water heater stores 40 to 60 gallons of hot water ready for use. A tankless (on-demand) water heater heats water only when you need it, delivering endless hot water and using 20 to 30% less energy. Tankless units cost more upfront but save money over their longer lifespan.
How much does water heater installation cost in Toronto?
A tank water heater installation in the GTA typically costs $900 to $1,800 installed. A tankless gas water heater installation ranges from $1,800 to $3,500 depending on venting requirements. The legacy Enbridge HER+ water-heater rebate closed Dec 31 2025; for heat-pump water heaters, the Ontario Home Renovation Savings Program (HRS) pays $500 instead.
Are there water heater rebates in Ontario in 2026?
The legacy Enbridge HER+ water-heater rebate closed Dec 31 2025. The active program is the Ontario Home Renovation Savings Program (HRS), which pays $500 for a heat pump water heater (not for conventional gas tank or tankless units). EcoFrost handles the HRS application for qualifying installs.
How long does water heater installation take?
A standard water heater replacement typically takes 2 to 4 hours. We offer same-day installation across the GTA - you will have hot water again before the end of the day in most cases.
What is a power vent water heater?
A power vent water heater uses an electric fan to exhaust combustion gases through a PVC pipe rather than a traditional metal chimney. This allows installation in locations without a chimney or direct outdoor access, making it ideal for many GTA homes and condos.
My water heater is leaking - what should I do?
Turn off the cold water supply valve at the top of the unit and set the thermostat to the vacation or pilot setting. If the leak is significant, turn off the gas supply as well. Call us immediately - a leaking water heater almost always requires replacement and can cause significant water damage if left unattended.
