Who to Call to Cap a Gas Line in Ontario

If you are removing an appliance, renovating a kitchen, or decommissioning an unused gas connection, you need to have the line properly capped by a TSSA-licensed gas technician. In Ontario, it is illegal to cap or modify a gas line yourself, even if the appliance has been removed. An improperly capped line creates a serious leak and explosion risk.

When You Need a Gas Line Capped

  • Removing an old gas stove or dryer
  • Demolishing a wall with a gas stub-out
  • Replacing gas appliances with electric alternatives
  • Decommissioning a gas fireplace or furnace
  • Pre-sale home inspection requiring gas line work

What the Capping Process Involves

  • Shutting off gas supply to the line being capped
  • Installing a certified steel or brass cap at the stub-out
  • Pressure-testing the capped connection
  • Restoring gas to the rest of your home
  • Providing documentation for your records

EcoFrost handles gas line capping across Mississauga, Toronto, Brampton, and the GTA. Most capping jobs are completed within 1 to 2 hours and are priced transparently before work begins. Gas Line FAQs

Do I need a permit for a new gas line?

Yes. In Ontario, all new gas line work requires a permit and must be inspected by a TSSA-authorized inspector. We handle the permit and inspection as part of every installation.

How much does a gas BBQ line cost?

A natural gas line for a BBQ typically costs $300–$600 depending on the distance from your gas meter and whether the line needs to go through walls or underground. We provide a firm quote before any work begins.

How long does a gas line installation take?

Most residential gas line jobs take 2–4 hours. Longer runs, underground lines, or complex routing through finished spaces may take a full day.

Can I run a gas line myself in Ontario?

No. Ontario law requires all gas line work to be performed by a licensed gas contractor (G1 or G2 license). Unlicensed gas work voids your home insurance and can result in fines.

What's the difference between a G1 and G2 license?

A G2 license covers natural gas systems up to 400,000 BTU - sufficient for most residential appliances. A G1 license covers all gas work including large commercial systems and propane. Our technicians hold both.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the building immediately, don't use any light switches or electronics, and call Enbridge Gas Emergency at 1-866-763-5427 from outside. Once the utility has cleared the scene, call us for repairs.
