Water Heater Installation Etobicoke: Common Questions

My Etobicoke house has no gas line to the basement. What are my options?

You have three, and the right one depends on what you are prepared to run. An electric tank is the simplest and cheapest to install, with higher running costs. A heat pump water heater costs more up front, runs far more efficiently than electric resistance and qualifies for a $500 rebate under the Home Renovation Savings Program. Or we run a gas line to the location, which is a real cost but opens up gas tank and tankless options.

Is a heat pump water heater sensible in an Etobicoke basement?

In the right basement, yes. It extracts heat from the surrounding air, so it needs a reasonable volume of space and it will cool and dehumidify that space as a side effect. In a large unfinished basement that is a bonus in summer. In a small sealed utility closet it will struggle and it is the wrong choice. We look at the room before recommending it.

How much more does electric cost to run than gas?

Enough to matter over a tank's life, which is why the up-front comparison alone is misleading. Electric resistance heating is the most expensive way to make hot water in Ontario. If you are staying in the house, that running cost usually justifies either a heat pump unit or the one-time cost of getting gas to the location.

Can you run a new gas line to the basement?

Yes, we hold G1 and G2 gas tickets and do gas line work. Whether it is worthwhile depends on the distance from the meter, the route, and whether other appliances would use it too. We price the line and the water heater together so you can compare against the electric options honestly.

How long does installation take?

Two to three hours for a straight tank swap. Longer if a gas line or new electrical circuit is part of the job, and we tell you which at the estimate.
