Heat Pump Repair Across the GTA

A heat pump fails differently from a furnace or an air conditioner, because it does both jobs and reverses to do them. Most of what we are called about turns out to be defrost, backup heat or configuration rather than a dead compressor.

Heat Pump Faults We Diagnose and Fix

Iced up and staying that way

Light frost in humid cold is normal and the defrost cycle exists to clear it. Ice that never clears means a failed defrost board, a dead defrost sensor, or a reversing valve stuck in heating.

Worked all autumn, failed in the first freeze

This pattern almost always points at backup heat rather than the heat pump. Above roughly zero the heat pump carries the house alone, so a dead auxiliary stage is invisible until the day you need it.

Blowing cool air on a call for heat

Could be a normal defrost cycle, could be a stuck reversing valve, could be the system running on backup only. We watch a full cycle rather than judging from one moment.

Running constantly and never satisfying

Often not a fault. A heat pump supplies air at a lower temperature than a furnace, so long run times are how it works. If it genuinely cannot keep up, we check charge, airflow and whether the unit is undersized for the house.

Costing far more to run than expected

Frequently a changeover temperature set wrong on a dual-fuel system, so it burns the expensive fuel at the wrong outdoor temperatures. Nothing is broken and the bill still climbs.

Error code lockout

We read the stored fault code rather than resetting and hoping. Defrost, pressure, sensor and communication faults all lock out and all need different work.

Outdoor unit noise or vibration

Fan contacting ice, loose panels, or compressor wear. On an exposed site it is usually the first two.

Meltwater refreezing under the unit

The condensate path or the stand height is wrong. A heat pump runs all winter and produces water on every defrost, so it needs clearance underneath that a summer-only air conditioner never did.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs

How much does heat pump repair cost?

Most repairs land between $150 and $800. Capacitors and sensors are at the low end, a defrost board mid-range, and reversing valve or refrigerant work at the top. The $129 diagnostic is flat at any hour and is waived if you proceed with the repair.

Is it normal for my heat pump to ice up?

A light frost on the outdoor coil in humid cold weather is normal, and the defrost cycle exists to melt it off. What is not normal is ice that never clears, ice thick enough to touch the fan blade, or a unit defrosting every twenty minutes. Those are faults worth diagnosing.

Why does my heat pump blow cool air sometimes?

During a defrost cycle the system briefly reverses to melt frost off the outdoor coil, and the indoor air feels cooler for a few minutes. That is designed behaviour. If it blows cool for long stretches on a call for heat, that is a stuck reversing valve or a backup heat problem.

Do you repair all heat pump brands?

Yes. Lennox, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Carrier, Goodman, Trane, Bosch, Napoleon and Fujitsu among others. We are an authorized Lennox dealer with genuine parts access, and we service every other major brand including ductless mini-splits.

Can a heat pump be repaired in winter?

Yes, and it is when most of these calls happen. We run 24/7 with no overtime surcharge. If the heat pump itself is down we can normally get the backup heat carrying the house the same visit, which buys time if a part has to come in.

My heat pump is only a few years old. Why has it failed?

Age is not the only factor. Siting is a common cause: a unit set at grade on the old air conditioner pad, or boxed into a tight enclosure, will ice and lock out regardless of how new it is. Configuration is another, since a changeover setpoint left at a factory default can make a healthy system look faulty.
