Does my Scarborough house have enough electrical service for a heat pump?
It is the first thing to establish and the thing most often skipped. Post-war Scarborough houses were built with 60 amp service, and many were upgraded to 100 amp at some point. A heat pump with electric backup heat is a substantial addition to that. We perform a load calculation on your actual panel rather than assuming, because finding out mid-installation is expensive.
What happens if the service is too small?
You have real options short of a full upgrade. A hybrid setup that keeps your gas furnace as the backup avoids the electric resistance load entirely, which is often enough to fit within an existing 100 amp service. Load management devices can also work. Where an upgrade genuinely is needed we include it in the quote up front so you are comparing complete numbers.
How much does a service upgrade cost?
It varies more than most HVAC line items because it depends on the panel, the meter, the mast and whether the supply to the house needs replacing as well. That work is done by an electrician, not by us, so we will tell you it is required and what it typically runs rather than pretending to quote it precisely.
Is a hybrid system a compromise?
Not really. A heat pump paired with your existing gas furnace runs on the heat pump for the large majority of the season and hands over to gas only in genuine cold. You get most of the efficiency benefit, you avoid the electrical upgrade, and you keep a heat source that works in a power-friendly way during extreme cold. For many Scarborough houses it is the better engineering answer, not just the cheaper one.
