My post-war Scarborough bungalow has never had central air. What does adding it involve?
More than setting a condenser outside. An evaporator coil has to go into the existing plenum above the furnace, which needs the headroom to accept it, and the system needs a return-air path capable of carrying cooling airflow. Bungalows of this era were commonly built with one central return, which is adequate for heating and marginal for cooling. Adding returns is often the difference between a system that works and one that runs all day.
Why does the return matter more than the supply?
Because air you cannot get back to the furnace is air you cannot cool. People focus on the supply registers, but a system is a loop. If there is only one return and the bedroom doors are closed, those rooms are effectively sealed off from the loop no matter how much air the supply pushes in. Adding a return to the bedroom hallway is one of the cheapest comfort improvements available in a bungalow.
Is there enough room above my furnace for the coil?
That is one of the first things we measure. Some Scarborough basements have low headroom or a furnace tucked under ducting with no vertical space for a coil. Where clearance is genuinely short there are shorter-profile coils and, failing that, ductless. We check before quoting rather than discovering it on install day.
Would a ductless system be simpler?
In some bungalows yes, particularly if you only want to cool the living space and the bedrooms rather than the whole house, or if adding returns would mean opening finished ceilings. We will price both honestly. Ductless costs more per zone and less in disruption.
Do I need a permit to add central air in Scarborough?
Usually not. Scarborough has been part of the City of Toronto since the 1998 amalgamation, and Toronto lists installing additional cooling systems in a house among the projects that do not need a building permit. Installing or modifying a heating system does need one. We tell you at the estimate which applies and handle the application when needed.
