Heat Pump Installation Hamilton - FAQs

I heat with propane in one of the former Hamilton townships. Is a heat pump worth it?

This is the strongest case for a heat pump anywhere in our service area. Propane and heating oil cost substantially more per unit of delivered heat than natural gas does, so the saving from switching to a heat pump is far larger than it would be for a house on the gas grid. On top of that, homes without natural gas qualify for the higher rebate tier, up to $7,500 under the Home Renovation Savings Program against up to $2,000 for a gas-heated home.

Which Hamilton areas are actually off the gas grid?

Parts of Flamborough, Binbrook, rural Ancaster and the edges of Glanbrook have properties on propane or oil rather than piped natural gas. It is worth checking rather than assuming, because service coverage is patchy and two neighbours can be on different fuels. Tell us what you burn now when you book the estimate.

Will a heat pump keep up through a Hamilton winter?

A cold-climate unit will carry the house through most of it. We still specify a backup heat source for the coldest stretches, and on an off-grid property that backup is normally electric resistance or the existing propane appliance retained as a secondary. The point is that the heat pump does the great majority of the season's work at a much lower cost per unit of heat.

Do I have the electrical capacity for it?

It has to be checked. Rural and older township properties vary widely in service size, and a heat pump plus electric backup is a meaningful load. We verify the panel at the estimate and include any upgrade in the quote rather than discovering it mid-install.

What rebates apply?
