My furnace is high-efficiency. Does that change which water heater I can install?
It changes it substantially, and it is the single most important question on a Hamilton install. If the furnace vents out a side wall, the masonry chimney was sized to carry two appliances and now carries one. A conventional atmospheric water heater on that oversized flue will not warm it enough to establish a proper draft, so exhaust condenses inside and the liner deteriorates. The fix at install time is a power-vent unit that vents out the wall independently, or relining the chimney to the correct diameter.
What is the difference between an atmospheric and a power-vent tank?
An atmospheric unit relies on hot exhaust rising naturally up a flue. A power-vent unit has a fan that pushes exhaust out through a horizontal plastic vent, so it does not need a chimney at all. Power-vent costs more and needs an electrical outlet nearby, and in a lower-city Hamilton home where the chimney has been orphaned it is usually the right answer rather than the expensive one.
Can I keep my existing chimney if I just replace like for like?
If the furnace still vents into it as well, generally yes. If the furnace has already moved to side-wall venting, then replacing like for like puts a new tank into a known bad situation. We look at the whole venting picture before quoting, because a cheap swap that fails a liner in three years is not cheap.
Does a tankless unit avoid the chimney problem entirely?
Yes. A gas tankless unit is sealed-combustion and vents out a side wall through its own dedicated pipe, so the chimney becomes irrelevant. The trade-offs are cost and gas line capacity, since a tankless unit needs considerably more gas input than a tank and older Hamilton piping is often undersized for it.
How long does installation take?
Two to three hours for a straight tank swap. Three to five for a tankless, or longer if venting has to be run through masonry. We tell you which at the estimate.
