Why Does My AC Smell? Musty, Vinegar, Rotten Eggs and More

When your air conditioner smells, the cause is usually moisture and mould inside the system, which is unpleasant but fixable. A few smells, though, point to something more serious: a rotten-egg or gas smell can mean a natural gas leak from a nearby appliance, and a burning smell can mean an electrical fault. This guide covers each AC smell, what it means, and what to do.

A musty, mildew, or dirty-sock smell is by far the most common. It comes from mould and bacteria growing on the damp evaporator coil, in a clogged condensate drain, or on a dirty filter. The AC creates condensation as it cools, and if that moisture cannot drain or the coil stays damp, mould grows and the smell blows through your vents. It is an air quality issue, not a safety emergency.

A vinegary or sour smell usually has the same root cause as musty: mould, bacteria, or mildew inside a damp system, sometimes combined with a slightly acidic condensate. Occasionally a sharp electrical or ozone-like smell can read as vinegary, which points to a motor or wiring issue rather than mould.

A burning, hot-plastic, or fishy smell means an electrical component is overheating: a failing fan motor, capacitor, or wiring. Turn the AC off at the thermostat and call a technician. Do not keep running it, because an electrical fault is a fire risk.

Because a central AC has no gas burner, a rotten-egg smell when the system runs usually means natural gas is being pulled in from a nearby gas appliance or a dead animal is decomposing in the ductwork. Since you cannot tell which from the smell alone, treat rotten eggs as a possible gas leak: leave, avoid switches, and call Enbridge from outside.

1. Replace or clean the air filter, which is the cheapest and most common fix.
2. Check and clear the condensate drain line so standing water and mould cannot build up.
3. Have the evaporator coil professionally cleaned; a mould-caked coil needs more than a filter change.
4. Run the fan (not cool) for a while to help dry a damp system after humid weather.
5. If the smell keeps returning, book an AC tune-up so a technician can clean the coil and drain and check for mould.
