A furnace can put out a range of smells, and knowing which are harmless and which are an emergency matters for your safety. A faint burning-dust smell at the first heat of the season is normal. A rotten-egg or sulphur smell is a natural gas leak and means leave the house now. This guide covers each smell, what causes it, and exactly what to do.
Rotten Eggs or Sulphur: Natural Gas Leak (Emergency)
Natural gas is odourless, so utilities add a sulphur or rotten-egg smell (mercaptan) as a warning. If you smell it near the furnace or anywhere in the home, treat it as a gas leak: leave immediately, avoid switches and flames, and call Enbridge at 1-866-763-5427 from outside. Do not go back in until they say it is safe.
Burning Dust: Usually Normal
A dusty, slightly burnt smell the first few times you run the furnace each fall is normal. Dust settles on the heat exchanger over the idle summer and burns off when the furnace fires up again. It should fade within an hour or two of running. Changing the air filter first helps. If it lasts longer than a day, investigate further.
Burning Plastic, Fishy, or Acrid: Electrical (Stop and Call)
A burning-plastic, fishy, or sharp acrid smell usually means an electrical component is overheating: a failing blower motor, a wiring problem, or a melting component on the control board. Turn the furnace off at the thermostat and the power switch and call a technician. Do not keep running it, as an electrical fault is a fire risk.
Musty or Mouldy: Air Quality Issue
A musty or mouldy smell when the furnace runs points to mould or mildew in the ductwork, on the humidifier pad, or on a dirty filter, not the furnace itself. Replace the filter, and if the smell continues, have the ducts and humidifier inspected. This is an indoor air quality issue rather than a safety emergency.
Sewage or Dead Animal: Not the Furnace Itself
- Sewage smell: often a dried-out drain trap near the furnace or a venting issue letting sewer gas in, rather than the furnace. Running water in nearby floor drains can refill a dry trap.
- Dead animal smell: usually an actual animal that got into the ductwork and died. The ducts need to be opened and cleaned. Unpleasant, but not a furnace fault.
When to Call a Technician
Evacuate and call the gas utility or 911 for a rotten-egg gas smell or a sounding CO alarm.
