Which Humidifier We'd Install on Your System
The right unit depends on what heats your home, how much space is around the furnace, and how big and dry the house is. All three types below are whole-home units fed by a water line, so there's no refilling like a portable humidifier.
Bypass Humidifier
Mounts on the supply or return duct with a small bypass duct between them. Warm air from the furnace flows through a water panel and picks up moisture. Simple, quiet and the lowest-cost unit to run.
Fan-Powered Humidifier
Has its own fan that pushes warm supply air through the water panel, so it needs no bypass duct and puts out more moisture than a bypass unit. Like a bypass unit, it humidifies while the furnace is heating.
Steam Humidifier
Boils water into steam and injects it into the ductwork. Output does not depend on warm furnace air, so it keeps working with heat pumps and cooler supply air. Usually needs its own electrical circuit.
What a Humidifier Installation Includes
Most bypass and fan-powered installs take about half a day. Steam installs can run longer when a new electrical circuit is needed.

In-home assessment
We look at your furnace or air handler, duct layout, the nearest cold water line and where the drain can go, then recommend a unit type and size for your home.

Mount the unit
The humidifier goes on the supply or return plenum, with a bypass duct for bypass models. Steam units mount on the supply side.

Water supply
A dedicated line from the cold water supply with a shut-off valve, so you can turn the humidifier off in spring without touching the rest of the house.

Drain
Evaporative units send unused water to a floor drain or laundry tub. If neither is close, we add a condensate pump.

Wiring & controls
We wire the unit to the furnace so it only runs on a heating call, and install a humidistat. Automatic models read the outdoor temperature and lower the target on cold nights to keep windows clear.

Can you add a humidifier to my existing furnace?
Yes. Almost any forced-air furnace or air handler can take a whole-home humidifier. We need a cold water line nearby, a place to drain (or room for a condensate pump), and space on the ductwork. We check all three during the in-home visit.
Which type of humidifier is best for a heat pump?
A steam humidifier. Bypass and fan-powered units evaporate water into warm supply air, and a heat pump's supply air is cooler than a gas furnace's, so their output drops. A steam unit makes its own moisture and does not depend on air temperature.
How long does a humidifier installation take?
Most bypass and fan-powered installs take about half a day. Steam installs can take longer because they usually need a dedicated electrical circuit.
How much does a whole-home humidifier cost to install?
