First Check: Is the Fan Set to ON or AUTO?
On your thermostat, find the fan setting. If it is set to ON, the blower runs 24/7, including the long stretches when the burner is off, so it blows unheated air that feels cold. Switch the fan to AUTO so it only runs when the furnace is actually producing heat. This single change resolves a large share of furnace-blowing-cold-air complaints, and it is worth checking before anything else.
Other Causes of a Furnace Blowing Cold Air
Overheating from a dirty filter
A clogged filter starves the furnace of air, so it overheats and the high-limit switch shuts the burner off while the fan keeps running to cool it down. You feel cold air. Replace the filter first; this is the most common mechanical cause.
Dirty flame sensor
A dirty flame sensor cannot confirm the flame, so the furnace lights, then shuts the gas off a few seconds later while the fan blows cold. Cleaning the sensor usually fixes it.
Ignition or pilot failure
If the igniter or pilot fails, the burner never fires but the fan may still run, blowing cold air. A control-board fault code points to ignition failure.
Overheated furnace on lockout
Repeated overheating can put the furnace into a lockout where it runs the fan but not the burner. Clearing the cause (usually airflow) and resetting resolves it.
Frozen condensate line
On a high-efficiency furnace, a frozen or clogged condensate drain trips a safety switch that stops the burner while the fan runs.
