High-efficiency furnace and boilersHad to meet specified efficiency thresholds.
Insulation (attic, wall, foundation, exposed floor)HRS still offers an insulation bundle up to $7,700.
Windows and doors (ENERGY STAR certified)HRS pays $100 per rough opening for windows.
Water heating (heat pump water heater, solar)HRS still pays $500 for a heat pump water heater.
Renewable energy (solar PV, solar thermal)Was often the largest single-line item in the loan.
Air sealingHRS still offers an air sealing rebate up to $250.
Smart thermostatHRS still pays $75-$100 alongside another qualifying upgrade.

How the loan worked

For reference. This process applied while the program was open; only homeowners approved before October 1, 2025 can still complete it.

01

Pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation

A NRCan registered energy advisor assessed the home and identified which upgrades qualified plus the baseline EnerGuide rating.

02

Contractor quote

The homeowner brought the EnerGuide report to a participating contractor, who quoted the recommended upgrades and provided the required documentation.

03

NRCan loan application

The homeowner applied through the Natural Resources Canada portal with the EnerGuide report, contractor quote, and upgrade list. NRCan issued pre-approval within 4 to 8 weeks.

04

Installation

The contractor completed the qualifying upgrades and held the project file with all invoices, equipment serials, and warranty documentation.

05

Post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation

The same energy advisor returned to verify the upgrades and confirm the improved rating.

06

Loan disbursement

NRCan disbursed the loan amount, repayable over 10 years at 0% interest. This step is only available to homeowners approved before the program closed.

What to use instead

With the loan closed, these active programs are how Ontario homeowners lower the cost of a heat pump today.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Canada Greener Homes Loan still available?+
No. The federal Canada Greener Homes Loan closed to new applications on October 1, 2025 once its funding was fully committed. New $40,000 interest-free loans are no longer being issued. Homeowners who were already approved keep access to their funding and can complete their retrofits.
What was the Canada Greener Homes Loan?+
It was a federal Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) program that offered Canadian homeowners up to $40,000 at 0% interest, repayable over 10 years, for eligible home energy efficiency retrofits. It had no income test. It has now closed to new applicants.
I was already approved. Can I still use my loan?+
Yes. Homeowners with an approved loan keep access to their funding and can proceed with their retrofit projects under their original terms. Only new applications stopped on October 1, 2025.
What can I use instead to finance a heat pump?+
For rebates, the Ontario Home Renovation Savings Program (HRS) pays up to $7,500 for a cold-climate air-source heat pump in a non-gas home (up to $2,000 in a natural-gas home), or up to $12,000 for geothermal. Income-qualified households can get a no-cost heat pump through Save on Energy's Energy Affordability Program. For financing the balance, ask us about standard equipment financing during your quote.
Can I still combine federal and provincial programs?+
The big federal stacking programs have closed. The Greener Homes Loan closed October 1, 2025 and the Oil-to-Heat-Pump grant closed July 31, 2026. The Ontario HRS heat pump and smart thermostat rebates remain active, and income-qualified households can use Save on Energy's Energy Affordability Program.
Does EcoFrost handle the paperwork for active programs?+
Yes. For the active HRS program we handle pre-registration on the IESO portal, installation documentation, and the rebate submission at no extra charge. You sign the application and provide ID; we handle the rest.
