Federal program for income-qualified households

Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program 2026

Income-qualified grant of up to $10,000 federally (up to $25,000 in co-delivery provinces) for low-to-median-income households. In Ontario it is delivered through Save on Energy as a no-cost heat pump. Replaces the closed Canada Greener Homes Grant.

Replaces the closed Canada Greener Homes Grant

The original Canada Greener Homes Grant (up to $5,000 for all incomes) closed January 20, 2026. The Affordability Program is its replacement for income-qualified households, delivered in Ontario through Save on Energy. If you do not qualify on income, see the Home Renovation Savings Program (no income test).

Who qualifies

You DO qualify if

  • • Low-to-median income (per NRCan provincial thresholds)
  • • You own or rent (rules vary by province) a primary residence in Canada
  • • Your retrofit is on the eligible upgrade list
  • • You complete a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation
  • • You install through a participating contractor
  • • You complete the post-retrofit verification

You do NOT qualify if

  • • Household income exceeds the provincial threshold
  • • Property is purely commercial / industrial
  • • Upgrade is not on the eligible list
  • • No pre-retrofit EnerGuide completed
  • • Self-installed work (no participating contractor invoice)

Income thresholds change annually. We confirm the current Ontario thresholds during your free assessment.

How to apply

EcoFrost handles every contractor-side step. NRCan reviews income and EnerGuide documentation through the federal (or co-delivery provincial) portal.

01

Confirm income eligibility

Use the NRCan portal's eligibility check. Income thresholds are set per province and updated annually. The check takes a few minutes and is non-binding.

02

Pre-retrofit EnerGuide

Book a registered energy advisor. For income-qualified households, the assessment fee is often subsidized through the program.

03

EcoFrost consultation

We assess your home, recommend qualifying upgrades (cold-climate heat pump, insulation, etc.), and confirm rebate amounts before you commit to anything.

04

Submit application

Apply through the federal NRCan portal (or co-delivery provincial portal if Ontario's delivery model includes one). Income documentation + EnerGuide report required.

05

Receive pre-approval and install

Once pre-approved, EcoFrost installs the qualifying upgrades. We hold all paperwork needed for post-retrofit verification.

06

Post-retrofit verification + payout

Energy advisor returns to confirm the upgrades. Grant is paid out by direct deposit typically within 2 to 4 weeks after verification.

How it works for income-qualified Ontario households

In Ontario this program is delivered through Save on Energy's Energy Affordability Program rather than by direct federal application. For eligible households it typically means:

  • A no-cost heat pump and related upgrades for eligible low-to-median-income households, delivered through Save on Energy
  • No separate federal application; you apply through the provincial administrator
  • If you are above the income threshold, use the Home Renovation Savings Program instead (up to $7,500 for a non-gas home, up to $2,000 for a gas home)

The federal Canada Greener Homes Loan (0% up to $40,000) and the Oil-to-Heat-Pump grant have both closed to new applicants, so they are no longer part of the picture.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program?+
Launched September 2025, the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program is the federal replacement for the closed Canada Greener Homes Grant. It targets low-to-median-income Canadian households with grants of up to $10,000 (federally delivered) or up to $25,000 (in co-delivery provinces) plus an additional $250 incentive. The program is $800M total and rolls out province-by-province.
Am I income-eligible?+
Eligibility is based on after-tax household income, set per province by Natural Resources Canada. As a general guideline, households earning up to roughly 120 percent of the provincial median income qualify. The NRCan portal has an exact eligibility check. EcoFrost can help you confirm during your assessment.
What is the difference between federal delivery and co-delivery?+
Federal delivery means NRCan administers the program directly (max $10,000 grant). Co-delivery means a participating province administers it with provincial funds added on top (max $25,000 plus a $250 bonus). In Ontario the program is delivered through Save on Energy's Energy Affordability Program, so eligible households apply provincially rather than through a federal portal.
How is this delivered in Ontario?+
In Ontario the Affordability Program is delivered through Save on Energy's Energy Affordability Program rather than by direct federal application. For eligible low-to-median-income households this typically means a no-cost heat pump and related upgrades. You apply through the provincial administrator, not a federal portal.
What if I do not qualify on income?+
If you exceed the income threshold, you cannot use the Affordability Program, but you can still use the provincial Home Renovation Savings Program (up to $7,500 for an air-source heat pump in a non-gas home, up to $2,000 in a natural-gas home, no income test). The federal Canada Greener Homes Loan that used to cover the remaining cost at 0% closed to new applications in October 2025; ask us about standard equipment financing instead.
How long does the application process take?+
Typically 3 to 6 months end-to-end: 2 to 6 weeks for the pre-retrofit EnerGuide, 4 to 8 weeks for application review, retrofit window, 2 to 4 weeks for post-retrofit verification, then payout.
Is rental property eligible?+
The program targets owner-occupied primary residences. Tenants in rental properties may qualify in some co-delivery province configurations. Check the NRCan portal for current rules in Ontario.
