AC and heat pumps in the Old Port Credit Village heritage district
The streets between Lakeshore Road West, Mississauga Road South, the lake and the Credit River form the Old Port Credit Village Heritage Conservation District. Its current plan has been in force since January 29, 2020.
The plan asks owners to keep heat pumps and other utilities to the side or rear of a property, and to install vents and mechanical equipment away from street view. On properties the plan lists as contributing, installing mechanical or electrical equipment that can be seen from outside needs a heritage permit from the City. So inside the district, we agree on where the outdoor unit and the furnace vents will go before we quote, and we tell you if the location needs a permit.

Replacing a furnace or adding a heat pump in an older Port Credit house
With more than a quarter of Port Credit homes built in 1960 or earlier, a replacement here is rarely a straight swap. These are the checks we make first:
- Duct size and return air: older houses often have too few returns for a modern furnace or a heat pump's higher airflow, which shows up as noise and uneven rooms.
- Venting: a high-efficiency furnace vents through plastic pipe in the wall, not the chimney. If a gas water heater is left on the old chimney by itself, its venting has to be checked too.
- Electrical service: a heat pump, or a heat pump with electric backup heat, may need more capacity than an older panel has. We check before recommending a model.
- Outdoor unit location: side-yard clearances on narrow lots, and the heritage district guidance above.
Condos and rental apartments
