The furnace overheated and shut the burners off. Restricted airflow causes most of these: a clogged filter, closed registers, or a blower that has slowed down. A failing run capacitor or ECM motor on the blower shows up here too.
5 blinks: flame with no call for heat
The board senses flame when the thermostat is not calling for heat, which usually means a gas valve is not closing fully. Turn the furnace off and leave it off. This is a gas valve replacement, not a cleaning job.
Inducer motor noise or failure
A worn inducer starts with a whine or rattle at start-up, then fails to build draft and triggers pressure switch faults. We confirm with a manometer reading and replace the motor assembly with the matching Goodman part.
Condensate trap and drain leaks
Goodman's condensing (90%+ AFUE) furnaces produce water that drains through a trap. A plugged trap, cracked hose or frozen drain line can leak onto the floor or shut the furnace off. We clear and flush the trap and reroute a drain that runs through a cold spot.
How a Goodman furnace reports a fault
Most single-stage and two-stage Goodman furnaces use one LED on the control board, visible through a small window in the blower door. The LED blinks a number of times, pauses, then repeats. Count the blinks before you switch anything off, because cutting the power clears the code. Modulating models such as the GMVM97 work differently. Goodman builds that furnace with a self-diagnostic board that stores a fault history and shows it on a two-digit, seven-segment display. A stored history shows the technician what happened before the visit, not just the last fault, which is why we read it before we replace anything.
What you can check first
- Replace a dirty filter (a common cause of the 4-blink high-limit code).
- Clear snow and ice from the two white plastic pipes outside (3 blinks often points here after a storm).
- Confirm the gas valve beside the furnace is open.
- Power-cycle the furnace once. If the same code returns, stop and call.
What needs a gas technician
- A 5-blink code: the board sees flame with no call for heat. Turn the furnace off.
- Any repeat lockout, pressure switch or inducer fault.
- Flame sensor cleaning, ignitor replacement and anything in the burner box.
- A tripped flame rollout switch. Never reset it yourself.

- Read the code and the history. We note the blink count or the stored codes before the power is touched.
- Watch a full start-up. Inducer, pressure switch closing, ignitor glow, gas valve opening, flame proving and blower start each happen in sequence, so the step where the furnace stops narrows the fault.
- Measure, then replace. We read the flame sensor signal in microamps, check the ignitor and the pressure switch with a meter and a manometer, and test the run capacitor or ECM motor on the blower.
- Check the condensate path. High-efficiency Goodman furnaces drain water through a trap and hoses. A plugged trap backs water into the pressure switch hose and causes the same lockout as a blocked vent.
- Inspect the heat exchanger and combustion. We look at the heat exchanger with a camera where access allows and run a combustion test before we hand the furnace back.
Goodman warranty: what to check before you pay for a part
Goodman parts are often still under warranty when the furnace fails, but the coverage depends on registration and ownership. These points come from Goodman's own warranty pages and certificates. Terms vary by model and year, so your certificate has the final word.
Registration within 60 days
Goodman gives a 10-year parts limited warranty and a lifetime heat exchanger limited warranty when the owner registers online within 60 days of installation. Without that registration, Goodman lists a 5-year warranty period for a gas furnace. Ontario owners need to register; the registration exemption Goodman lists covers Quebec, not Ontario.
Parts only, no labour
Goodman supplies the replacement part. Its certificate states that Goodman does not pay labour, freight or other service costs. The repairing contractor takes the failed part to a Goodman distributor to complete the claim.
Tied to the original owner
Registered coverage lasts while the original registered owner, or their spouse, owns and lives in the home where the furnace was installed. If you bought the house with the furnace in it, assume the long coverage ended with the sale until the warranty lookup shows otherwise.
Heat exchanger failures in the first 10 years
For a registered owner, Goodman's certificate says a heat exchanger covered by the lifetime warranty that fails in the first 10 years is handled by replacing the furnace with a new equivalent unit, not by patching the old one. Installation labour is still not included.
The first four digits of a Goodman serial number give the year and month the furnace was built (1306 means June 2013).
