Gas Line Installation Cost Ontario 2026: BBQ, Stove, Generator, Pool

EFEcoFrost TeamMay 21, 2026Updated May 20265 min read

Gas line work is one of the few HVAC services that is legally required to be done by a TSSA-certified gas technician in Ontario. That makes pricing more standardized than other trades, but it still varies based on appliance, run distance, and whether your existing line has spare capacity. Here is what 2026 gas line installation actually costs in the GTA.

Gas Line Installation Prices by Use

Prices below are EcoFrost typical 2026 installs in the GTA, including TSSA permit, pressure test, and inspection.

Use CaseTypical Installed PriceTypical Time on Site
BBQ quick-connect hookup$350 to $6502 to 4 hours
Gas stove / range line$450 to $9003 to 5 hours
Gas dryer line$400 to $8003 to 4 hours
Gas fireplace line$500 to $1,2004 to 6 hours
Pool heater line$700 to $1,4004 to 8 hours
Standby generator hookup$800 to $2,0004 to 8 hours
Outdoor patio heater line$500 to $1,0003 to 5 hours
Hot tub or sauna gas line$600 to $1,4004 to 6 hours
🔧 The biggest cost driver is distance from the existing gas meter or trunk line to the new appliance. A 15-foot run is typically half the price of a 60-foot run. We measure and quote firm fixed-price during the free in-home estimate; no surprises.

What Drives the Range

Four factors explain the spread within each use case.

  • Distance from meter to appliance: Longer runs need more pipe, more support brackets, more potential floor/wall crossings. Each 10 feet adds ~$50 to $120 to material plus labor.
  • Existing line capacity: If your existing gas line can absorb the added load, the new run starts from a tee. If the existing line is at capacity, an upgrade to the trunk line is needed ($300 to $800 extra).
  • Wall and floor penetrations: Each wall/floor cross-through adds $50 to $150. Hidden runs through finished basements may need ceiling cutting.
  • Appliance gas type: Most residential appliances use natural gas. Propane (LPG) requires different fittings and pressure regulation - usually $100 to $250 more.

What Is NOT Included (Avoid Surprise Charges)

Reputable contractor quotes are usually all-inclusive, but a few items are commonly NOT included. Confirm before signing:

  • Drywall patching: If we cut into a finished wall to run pipe, we cut a clean access hole but do not finish drywall. Drywall finishing is $100 to $400 by a separate trade.
  • Appliance purchase: The gas line cost above is the line and connection. The actual BBQ, stove, generator, etc. is separate.
  • Electrical work for generator: Standby generators need an electrical transfer switch ($1,200 to $2,500) wired by a licensed electrician.
  • Trenching for outdoor runs: If the line crosses a yard underground (e.g., to a pool heater 50 feet away), trenching may add $300 to $800.

?Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to install a gas line in Ontario?

Pricing depends on appliance and distance. Common 2026 GTA prices: BBQ quick-connect hookup $350-$650, gas stove line $450-$900, gas dryer line $400-$800, generator hookup $800-$2,000, pool heater $700-$1,400, fireplace line $500-$1,200. Permit, TSSA inspection, and pressure test included.

Do I need a permit for a gas line in Ontario?

Yes. All gas line work in Ontario requires a TSSA permit by law. The permit fee ($75 to $150) is typically included in the contractor quote. DIY gas line work is illegal and voids your home insurance. EcoFrost pulls and handles every permit on your behalf.

How long does gas line installation take?

BBQ quick-connect: 2 to 4 hours. Stove line: 3 to 5 hours. Generator (larger gauge, longer run): 4 to 8 hours. Pool heater: 4 to 8 hours including pressure test and TSSA inspection wait. We schedule the TSSA inspection on the same day where possible.

Can I extend an existing gas line for a second appliance?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The deciding factor is the existing line capacity. A line sized for just a furnace usually cannot handle an added gas dryer or generator. We measure the existing gauge and BTU load during the free quote. If capacity is short, the upgrade is a separate cost ($300 to $800).

What is included in the price?

TSSA permit, all pipe and fittings, professional install by a licensed gas technician, pressure test, leak test with electronic sniffer, TSSA inspection, and the appliance connection (quick-disconnect for BBQ, ¼-turn shut-off for stoves and dryers). Patching drywall after wall penetrations is NOT included.

Do you do same-day gas line work?

For straightforward installs (BBQ hookups, simple stove/dryer lines), often yes during the busy season we are typically 1 to 5 days out. Generator and pool installs need 1 to 2 weeks of lead time because of TSSA inspection scheduling.
