If your furnace fires up, runs for a minute or two, shuts off, then starts again a few minutes later, it is short cycling. A healthy furnace in a GTA winter runs in cycles of roughly 10 to 15 minutes. When those cycles drop to 2 to 5 minutes and repeat all day, the furnace burns extra gas, wears out the igniter and blower, and never lets the house reach a steady temperature. What counts as short cycling?
Short cycling means the burner shuts off before the furnace finishes a normal heating cycle, then restarts too soon. A few quick cycles on a mild day can be normal, but frequent 2 to 5 minute cycles, especially on a cold day when the furnace should run longer, point to a real problem. The most common trigger is the furnace overheating and tripping its own safety limit switch, so airflow is the first thing to rule out.
The 8 causes of a short-cycling furnace
Clogged air filter (the #1 cause)
A dirty filter starves the furnace of return air. Heat builds up inside the cabinet, the high-limit switch trips to prevent damage, and the burner shuts off. Once it cools, it fires again and repeats. Replace a visibly grey filter and this often fixes it outright.
Blocked or closed vents and returns
Too many closed supply registers or blocked cold-air returns cause the same overheating as a dirty filter. Open your vents and keep furniture and rugs off the returns.
Dirty flame sensor
A carbon-coated flame sensor cannot confirm the flame, so the control board shuts the gas off for safety within seconds of ignition, then tries again. This produces very fast, repeated cycling. Thermostat problems
A thermostat with dead batteries, loose wiring, or one mounted in a hot spot (near a vent, in direct sun, or above a fireplace) reads the wrong temperature and cuts the cycle short. Fresh batteries and correct placement often solve it.
Blocked exhaust or intake vent
On a high-efficiency furnace, the two white PVC pipes to the outside can get blocked by snow, ice, leaves, or a bird nest. The pressure switch then shuts the furnace down mid-cycle. Clear the outside terminations, a common issue in Ontario winters.
Clogged condensate drain

An oversized furnace
A furnace that is too large for the home heats the air to the thermostat setting so fast that it shuts off before a full cycle, then restarts as the house quickly cools. This is a design problem, not a repair, and is one reason correct sizing matters at installation.
Faulty limit switch, control board, or cracked heat exchanger
A failing high-limit switch, a bad control board, or, more seriously, a cracked heat exchanger can all cause cycling. A cracked heat exchanger is a carbon monoxide hazard and needs a licensed technician immediately. What you can safely check yourself
- Replace the air filter if it is grey or you cannot see light through it.
- Open all supply registers and clear anything covering the cold-air returns.
- Set the thermostat to Heat, a few degrees above room temperature, and replace its batteries.
- Walk outside and clear snow, ice, or debris from the two PVC vent pipes (high-efficiency furnaces).
- Check for water around the furnace base, which points to a condensate drain issue.
